New Jersey’s environment remains a treasure in need of attention. Since 1994, EarthShare New Jersey has raised over $7 million to help the environmental non-profits that tend to this treasure. We’ve partnered with employers all over the state to bring education and volunteer experiences for their employees as well as workplace philanthropy programs.
COVID-19 has significantly impacted our operation. Programming to support our non-profit members has had to be rescheduled, some indefinitely. The annual EarthShare Celebrates New Jersey fundraiser, which recognizes environmental leaders and brings in support for EarthShare New Jersey’s work, has been moved as well. As a result, approximately $30,000 in much needed operating funds never materialized this spring.
In addition to providing financial support, these programs create opportunities for new relationships and new sources of funding for our programs and our member organizations. Even as the state begins to reopen, the extended impact of physical distancing will further delay our ability to schedule and fully implement the programs and services that make a difference. The loss of both financial support and relationship development opportunities simultaneously presents a significant hurdle to overcome.
However…I and our Board of Directors are confident that the programs and services we offer will be even more relevant in the post-COVID-19 environment, and the staff of EarthShare New Jersey is dedicated to our mission. We will shortly announce new virtual programming that will continue to introduce and engage the public with the environmental treasures in New Jersey. We are also moving forward with a broad offering of experiences for individuals, families and employers in the fall. But we need to make sure we are financially stable to meet these goals.
